Car of the Month: Lamborghini Diablo
From now on, I’m starting a monthly series called “Car of the Month”. Every month I’ll post a car of my choosing, and I’ll talk about it, facts, it’s history and more interesting things. Obviously, I will only mention the most important cars, beacause there a whole lot of models, and I couldn’t cover them all. I chose the Lambo Diablo as it’s one of my favourite cars ever, and I think it’s a mythic car.
The car of this month is the… Lamborghini Diablo!
The Lamborghini Diablo is a series of cars made by the Italian car manufacturer Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A.
Diablo
The first Lamborghini Diablo was presented the 21st of January 1990. It came with a 5.7L DOHC V12 engine, which was capable of producing 485hp, 580Nm and a top speed of 325km/h. The first Diablo was RWD, and went 0-100km/h in just 4.5 seconds.
Diablo VT
Introduced in 1993, the Lamborghini Diablo VT was updated to AWD. It also included air intakes to increase brake cooling. The car’s handling was improved by the new drivetrain, which could transmit 25% of the torque to the front wheels during rear wheel slip. Aesthetically, the Diablo VT was nearly identical to the original Diablo.
Diablo SE 30
Presented as a limited-production car to conmemorate the 30th anniversary of the company, the Diablo SE 30 was introduced in 1993. The street-legal car received an engine improvement, now capable of producing 523hp, thanks to changes in the fuel injection system, intake and exhaust. However, it remained RWD, as the original Diablo. Also, the performance was increased by undergoing a weight reduction, removing some comodities, such as air conditioning, power steering and stereo, making it more sportsy, and more uncomfortable at the same time, due to the lack of air conditioning.
Diablo SV
This 1995 Diablo inherited the SV (Super Veloce) title from the Lamborghini Miura. Once again, the car’s performance was improved to 510hp @ 7.100rpm and 580Nm @ 5.900rpm. The drivetrain kept the RWD. The brakes were also improved by increasing the disc’s diameter. This model included and optional “SV” decal for the sides of the car.
Diablo GT
The Diablo GT was part of the facelift models of the Diablo series. This new version was a more race-focused car. It was presented in 1998. There were major exterior changes, thus giving it a more agressive style. The engine block remained the same, but the displacement was slightly improved; from 5.7 to 6.0L, giving it noticeably more power, which reached 567hp and a maximum of 630Nm. The transmission reamined the same: 5-speed, and the gear ratio could be modified to meet the buyer’s needs.
Diablo GTR
Introduced at the Bologna Motor Show in 1999, the Diablo GTR was a car specifically designed for racing. The GTR went through a weight reduction process, removing the air conditioning, rolling windows, stereo and some more features. This new model included a roll cage, improved intake system, MOMO fire supression system, a really big rear spoiler, 18 inch magnesium wheels, more stiff and lower suspension system, racing brake calipers, and more improvements. The GTR kept the 6.0 liter V12, RWD setup, but slightly increasing power and torque, to 590hp and 640Nm due to the lightened crankshaft, titanium connecting rods and variable valve timing.
